John Meechan is a Yorkshireman now living in the Midlands who started his folk music life as a singer, playing guitar and English concertina, and then got involved in both sword and social dance.

He started calling some 40-odd years ago spurning anything remotely American. These days he can be seen and heard at festivals (Chippenham, Eastbourne, Sidmouth, Lichfield, Whitby, Casterton, Bromyard and lots more), dance clubs and weekends/days of dance up and down the country having apparently got a reputation as a caller of American squares and contras. However, if asked, he also calls lots of dances in the English style.

He is naturally creative individual in all aspects of his life and has written many dances.

Over the last 10 years or so he has been one of the prime movers in the rise and promotion of contra dance in the UK seeing it as a way of getting younger people involved in another form of dance as well as ceilidh.
